    The SOE Mission

At AU SOE, we empower creative, passionate, and critical thinkers to be effective educators for a diverse and changing world. Our programs and activities are guided by our vision and mission:

    • The mission of the School of Education is to create knowledge and prepare students to transform societies through education.
    • The School of Education aims to be locally, nationally, and internationally recognized for making a meaningful impact in the field of education through innovative teaching, research, and service. Our impact will be achieved through rigorous scholarship; advocating for equitable and inclusive learning environments; advancing social justice; preparing effective educators; providing leadership in public-policy arenas; and collaborating with local, national, and international communities and organizations.

The mission of the School of Education is really to transform societies through education. And in a broad sense, education can be teaching and learning. It can be educational research. It can be advocating for education-- building learning communities, building education policies.

Some of the things that brought me to the School of Education is seeing all of the inequity that exists, and wanting to be part of the solution with a focus on anti-racist education, and in finding a way to bridge the opportunity gaps. The School of Education is an amazing place for students, I've had so much support.

The class size is pretty small, and you know, that makes for individualized attention--

Which gives the opportunity for students and faculty to really get to know one another. Have, you know, what I call critical conversations in class. Building relationships that go far beyond a course.

Concepts that they mastered in the classroom-- Those concepts need to be translated into action. Students have multiple opportunities to practice what they have learned in the classroom, whether it's through internships, student teaching, practicum, their international consultancy capstones.

I'm currently doing my student practicum. For me, it's been a very easy transition because it is so guided.

We have really created a thriving learning community that's diverse, inclusive, where we have faculty who are committed to students. It's a wonderful place.
